Manu Explained

Manu Cultural Zone vs Reserved Zone

Compare access, journey length and the character of Manu's principal visitor routes.

Manu travel guide

The Cultural Zone and the deeper Manu River visitor route offer different levels of immersion. Shorter Cultural Zone journeys generally follow the overland transition from Cusco through Paucartambo, the Andean entrance and cloud forest toward the upper Madre de Dios area. They suit travelers with fewer days who still want to experience Manu's dramatic ecological change.

Longer Reserved Zone itineraries continue by boat toward the Manu River visitor sectors. SERNANP describes routes through Limonal, Romero, Otorongo, Salvador and Pakitza, with river travel, forest walks and wildlife-observation infrastructure. Reaching these sectors requires more travel time and a longer operating plan.

Choose according to available days, comfort with extended road and river travel, and the current authorized itinerary. Exact access and activities must always be confirmed for the selected departure.
