Day 01: CUSCO - WAYQUECHA

Day 1
Day 01: CUSCO - WAYQUECHA
Early in the morning, we will pick you up from your hotel in our van and start the journey towards Huacarpay Lake, which is 45 minutes from Cusco. Here, we will make our first stop to observe some very important species, including two endemics: (Bearded Mountaineer, Rusty Fronted Canastero) and other rare species such as: Streak-fronted Thornbird, Plumbeous Rail, Many-colored Rush Tyrant, Puna Teal, White Tufted Grebe, Chilean Flamingo, Wren-like Rushbird, and many more species. After this activity, we will continue the journey towards Manu Road, with additional stops along the way to observe more species, such as Ground Tyrants, Andean Flicker, Mountain Caracara, Peruvian Sierra Finch, Spot-winged Pigeon, and more. We will then arrive in the province of Paucartambo, where we will make another stop to purchase drinks such as water, soda, wine, and others. Afterward, we will continue the journey to Ajanacco, making some stops to observe species such as Golden-collared Tanager, Chestnut-bellied Mountain Tanager, Moustached Flowerpiercer, and more. We will arrive at Ajanaco, the beginning of the Manu National Park at an altitude of 11483 ft. From here, we will descend the route towards Wayquecha with more stops as we enter the cloud forest, where we can observe many bird species, including: Puna Thistletail, White-browed Conebill, Scarlet-bellied Mountain Tanager, Urubamba Antpitta, Puna Tapaculo, Yungas Pygmy Owl, Blue-capped Tanager, Line-fronted Canastero, Great Thrush, White-throated Tyrannulet, and more. We will continue the journey to Wayquecha for lunch. Upon arrival, we will settle into our rooms, followed by lunch and a relaxing break. Afterward, we will go out to observe birds along the route with our vehicle, where we have the opportunity to see: Gray-breasted Mountain Toucan, Mountain Cacique, Hooded Mountain Tanager, Barred Fruiteater, Band-tailed Fruiteater, Scarlet-bellied Mountain Tanager, Grass-green Tanager, Golden-collared Tanager, White-banded Tyrannulet, Black-faced Brushfinch, Collared Inca, Long-tailed Sylph, Rufous-capped Thornbill, Shining Sunbeam, Andean Guan, and many others. After this activity, we will return to the lodge for dinner

Day 2
Day 02: WAYQUECHA – COCK OF THE ROCK LODGE
We will wake up very early for breakfast, then after breakfast, we will pack up our things and head to Cock of the Rock Lodge with many stops along the route to observe some endemic species and common birds such as: Red-and-white Antpitta, Inca Flycatcher, Marcapata Spinetail, and rare species such as: Golden-headed Quetzal, Blue-banded Toucanet, Barred Becard, Chestnut-crested Becard, Hanson's Flycatcher, Blue-and-black Tanager, Saffron-crowned Tanager, Capped Conebill, Andean Solitaire, Montane Woodcreeper, Olive-backed Woodcreeper, Superciliares Hemispingus, Unadorned Flycatcher, Black-streaked Puffbird, White-eared Solitaire, Black-and-chestnut Eagle, Solitary Eagle, Lesser Violetear, White-crowned Tapaculo, Scale-naped Parrot, Speckled-faced Parrot, Hazel-fronted Pygmy Tyrant, Spotted Tanager, Bolivian Tyrannulet, and many more species. After this activity, we will continue the journey to CORL for lunch. Upon arrival, we will first settle into the rooms, followed by lunch at the lodge and a rest. Later, we will observe hummingbirds at feeders in the garden, such as: Violet-fronted Brilliant, Many-spotted Hummingbird, Speckled Hummingbird, Wire-crested Thorntail, Green Hermit, Peruvian Piedtail, Geoffroy’s Daggerbill, Booted Racket-tail, and White-bellied Woodstar. After observing these hummingbirds, we will continue bird watching and visit the lek of the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, where males dance to attract females or mates, providing excellent photo opportunities. After visiting the lek, we will continue observing more species such as: Crested Quetzal, Spotted Barbtail, Black-eared Hemispingus, Golden Tanager, Orange-eared Tanager, Blue-necked Tanager, Paradise Tanager, Yellow-throated Chlorospingus, Dusky Green Oropendola, Montane Foliage Gleaner, Olive Flycatcher, Scale-crested Pygmy Tyrant, and more. After this, we will return to the lodge for a coffee break and then head back out for a 25 minute drive to observe the Lyre-tailed Nightjar and Rufescent Screech Owl. After this activity, we will return to the lodge for dinner.

Day 3
Day 03: COCK OF THE ROCK LODGE
We will wake up early for breakfast at the lodge at 5:00 am, and afterward, we will leave with our vehicle for a route down with many stops and walks to find mixed flocks of various species such as: Yellow-rumped Antwren, Amazonian Umbrellabird, Cinnamon-faced Tyrannulet, Peruvian Piedtail, Slaty Gnateater, Slate Antwren, Lanceolated Monklet, Paradise Tanager, Golden Tanager, White-winged Tanager, Golden-olive Woodpecker, Versicolored Barbet, Slaty-capped Flycatcher, Marble-faced Bristle-tyrant, Black-billed Treehunter, Solitary Eagle, and many other species. After this activity, we will return to the lodge for lunch and rest. Later in the afternoon, we will go out again for another walk along the route to search for species we may have missed. Afterward, we will return to the lodge for dinner and optional owling.

Day 4
Day 04: COCK OF THE ROCK LODGE – VILLA CARMEN
We will wake up early again for breakfast at the lodge, then pack our bags and begin the journey to Villa Carmen, which is two hours from CORL. Along the way, we will make many stops to observe species we have not yet seen, such as: Olive Finch, Ornate Flycatcher, Lanceolated Monklet, Crested Quetzal, Amazonian Umbrellabird, Black-goggled Tanager, Cinnamon-faced Tyrannulet, Orange-bellied Euphonia, Bay-headed Tanager, Blue Dacnis, Masked Trogon, Yellow-rumped Antwren, and others, such as tanagers, flycatchers, tyrannulets, and more. After this activity, we will continue to Villa Carmen Lodge, passing through two small villages, Patria and Pilco Pata, before arriving at Villa Carmen for lunch. Upon arrival, we will settle into the lodge, followed by lunch and a relaxing break. In the afternoon, we will go on trails in a bamboo forest where we will find many species, such as: Bamboo Antshrike, Manu Antbird, White-lined Antbird, Goeldi’s Antbird, White-cheeked Tody Flycatcher, White-browed Antbird, Ornate Stipplethroat, Chestnut-tailed Antbird, Black-faced Antbird, and more species, such as tanagers, flycatchers, swallows, jays, Oropendolas, and others. After the walk in the trails, we will return to the lodge for a shower and dinner. Afterward, we will have an optional owling session where we may observe: Black-banded Owl, Tropical Screech Owl, Tawny-bellied Screech Owl, Ocellated Poorwill, Ladder-tailed Nightjar, and Common Pauraque.

Day 5
Day 05: VILLA CARMEN – SALVACIÓN
Today we won’t wake up very early, after breakfast, we will head towards Salvación by vehicle for 40 minutes. Once there, we will take a 15-minute walk to visit Machu Wasi, where we will observe a variety of bird species around a small lagoon, such as: Hoatzin, Pale-eyed Blackbird, Rufous-sided Crake, Blackish Rail, Horned Screamer, Orange-backed Tropical, Red-capped Cardinal, Black-capped Donacubius, Limkin, Scarlet Macaw, Chestnut-fronted Macaw, Lesser Kiskadee, Green Kingfisher, Amazon Kingfisher, Green and Rufous Kingfisher, and Lemon-throated Barbet. After observing these species, we will return to Pilco with some stops at two important locations: the Inka Amazonia Hummingbird viewing spot, one of the best places to observe hummingbirds and take photos, with species like Gould’s Jewelfront, Rufous-crested Coquette, Black-bellied Thorntail, Wiry-crested Thorntail, Golden-tailed Sapphire, Blue-fronted Lancebill, Long-billed Star-throat, Amethyst Woodstar, Koepcke’s Hermit, Great-billed Hermit, White-browed Hermit, Buff-tailed Sicklebill, White-necked Jacobin, Fork-tailed Woodnymph, Violet-headed Hummingbird, and many more. After this activity, we will return to the lodge for lunch, then take some time to relax. In the afternoon, we will visit another spot with hummingbird feeders and other species for birdwatching and photography, such as White-browed Hermit, Rufous-breasted Hermit, Gray-breasted Sabrewing, Sapphire-spangled Emerald, Blue-tailed Emerald, Amazonian Antpitta, Rufous-sided Crake, King Vulture, Fine-barred Piculet, Yellow-billed Nunbird, and Blue-headed Macaw. After visiting this site, we will return to Villa Carmen Lodge for dinner. There is an optional Owling activity at night. Overnight at CORL.

Day 6
Day 06: VILLA CARMEN – COCK OF THE ROCK LODGE
Today, we wake up early for breakfast, then head out to explore trails where we will look for some rare bird species, such as: Black-backed Tody-Flycatcher, Plain Softtail, Butterfly Coquette, Orange-fronted Plushcrown, Fine-barred Piculet, Scarlet-hooded Barbet, Pheasant Cuckoo, Chestnut-capped Puffbird, Little Cuckoo, Cabani's Spinetail, Black-capped Tinamou, Chestnut-backed Antshrike, Band-tailed Manakin, Large-headed Flatbill, Black Hawk-Eagle, Buckle’s Forest Falcon, Black-throated Antbird, Riparian Antbird, Fiery-capped Manakin, Plain Brown Woodcreeper, Cinnamon-throated Woodcreeper, Rufous-headed Woodpecker, Peruvian Recurvebill, White-lored Tyrannulet, Lineated Woodpecker, Crimson-crested Woodpecker, Blue-throated Piping Guan, White-throated Toucan, Amazonian Emerald Toucanet, Chestnut-eared Aracari, and many more species. Afterward, we will return to the lodge at midday for a shower and lunch. Then, we will pack up and start heading to CORL, making stops along the way for some hard-to-find species we missed earlier, such as: Yellow-rumped Antwren, Olive Finch, Peruvian Piedtail, Amazonian Umbrella Bird, Lanceolated Monklet, and others. We will continue the journey to CORL, where we will arrive for dinner. Overnight at CORL.

Day 7
Day 07: COCK OF THE ROCK LODGE – CUSCO
We will wake up early for breakfast and then search for species like Cerulean-capped Manakin, Yungas Manakin, Brown Tinamou, and Slaty Gnateater in the trails at CORL. Afterward, we will begin our journey back to Cusco with a box lunch, making some stops along the way to see species such as Hazel-fronted Pygmy Tyrant, Ochre-faced Tody Flycatcher, Chestnut-crested Cotinga, and Band-tailed Fruiteater. We will continue the trip to Cusco, where we will drop you off at your hotel or the airport if you have a flight.
